Retro specialist Digital Eclipse has announced Tetris Forever for Nintendo Switch, which compiles over 15 classic Tetris games in an interactive documentary format.
Launching this year, you’ll be able to participate in several lesser-known Tetris games, including Super Bombliss DX, Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss, Hats offand many more. In addition, over an hour of documentary footage will be available to watch via short clips that provide invaluable insight into the history of the iconic puzzle franchise.
Finally, a new mode called ‘Tetris Timewarp’ allows you to jump between gameplay styles from across the series. It looks pretty cool and we can’t wait to try it.
If that wasn’t enough, it was also confirmed that the NES version of Tetris will land on Nintendo Switch Online this winter. A specific release date wasn’t announced, so we’re guessing it will be shadowed at some point.
Unsurpassed after four decades, Tetris Forever celebrates the original, genre-inspiring puzzle game that escaped from behind the Iron Curtain, onto the world stage and into our cultural consciousness!
More than 15 playable classic games from the series’ history are featured, including many being released for the first time outside of Japan. Battle your friends in multiplayer cult favorite Tetris Battle Gaiden, create massive explosions to clear lines in Super Bombliss, and see where it all began in 1984 with an exact recreation of the first version of Tetris on the Electronika 60 computer.
As the next release in Digital Eclipse’s acclaimed Gold Master Series, Tetris Forever includes over an hour of all-new documentary film exploring the lifelong friendship and creative partnership between Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and The Tetris Company founder Henk Rogers as they share the extraordinary but true story of Tetris that you never knew.
And since this celebration wouldn’t be complete without a brand new Tetris experience, prepare to take part in… Tetris Time Warp! Up to four players will “warp” between different eras of Tetris in real time to experience a variety of classic graphic styles and game mechanics!
